It is basically composed of calcium carbonate (calcite/aragonite), and may contain bioclasts and a concentration of organic phosphates. Its average size is that of a grain of sand (greater than 2 mm in diameter), and it has extremely high porosity and low particle size selection, hardness, and specific gravity.
