Emerald is a variety of the mineral beryl (an aluminum beryllium cyclosilicate, Be3Al2(SiO3)6). It is distinguished by its green color—ranging from dark to light and translucent to opaque—as well as its characteristic inclusions and vitreous-to-silky luster. This color arises from trace elements such as chromium, vanadium, and iron. It forms through complex, rare, and localized geological processes.

This emerald originates from Muzo, Boyacá, Colombia—one of the world's oldest and most significant mining regions, also famous for "Trapiche" emeralds. These deposits were mined by the Incas and later rediscovered by the Spanish in the 17th century; production continues to this day. Extraction is carried out via galleries, though preferably through open-pit terraced mining. The soft, brittle rock containing the emeralds is dislodged using rods and collected by hand. The host rock is a black calcareous slate containing accessory minerals: albite, apatite, aragonite, barite, calcite, dolomite, fluorite, and pyrite.
