ORIGIN & THE SCIENCE OF BEAUTY
Alexandrite is a rare variety of Chrysoberyl—an aluminum beryllium oxide with the formula BeAl₂O₄—characterized by an orthorhombic crystal system and high hardness (8.5 on the Mohs scale). Its most famous feature is the "alexandrite effect": the perception of different colors depending on the light source. Trace amounts of chromium replace some of the aluminum in the crystal structure and selectively absorb light; consequently, the gem may display green or blue-green tones in daylight and reddish, violet, or amethyst-like hues under incandescent light. The intensity of this color change varies naturally from specimen to specimen.
Discovered in Russia's Ural Mountains in the 1830s, it was named in honor of the future Tsar Alexander II. The conditions required for its formation are unusual, as beryllium and chromium rarely concentrate in the same geological environment. New deposits were later identified in Brazil, Sri Lanka, East Africa, and other locations, yet natural alexandrite remains among the rarest and most sought-after gemstones.
