Classic studies describe the Irati Formation as a sequence of pyrobituminous black shales with carbonate intercalations, "Flint Dolls" (concretionary nodules), and *Mesosaurus* remains. This association reinforces the value of these "dolls" as characteristic elements of the Irati geological context, even though they are not body fossils themselves.
ORIGIN & THE SCIENCE OF BEAUTY
The regional name refers to concretions formed by the union of two or more natural flint nodules; their organic contours result from the merging—or coalescence—of flint nodules during silicification and diagenesis. Their organic, lobed, and sculptural forms were shaped by geological processes—without molds or replication—making each specimen a true mineral masterpiece.
Concretions are the balls, small spheres, and similar shapes found in many locations, associated with rock layers. In general, they result from the differential cementation of minerals—such as calcium, silica, iron, and pyrite—around a nucleus, driven by variations in the surrounding environment (such as pH fluctuations).
In various carbonate quarries within the Irati Formation here in the state of São Paulo, silica concretions ranging from centimeters to meters in size can be found amidst limestone layers. In this instance, the rock layers represent carbonate deposition in a shallow marine environment under a semi-arid climate. Consequently, silica dissolved in these alkaline waters (pH > 7) precipitated as a gel during periods of lower sea levels or more acidic pH conditions—the latter caused by the decomposition of organic matter, which releases CO₂. Some zones are richer in silica concretions than others, and completely silicified layers may also occur. Certain concretions grow into elongated shapes that touch neighboring ones, forming what are known as "Bonecas de Sílex" (flint nodules/concretions). Microfossils—such as pollen, charcoal fragments from wildfires, and cyanobacteria—are often found within them.
"Sílex" (also known as chert, or "flint" particularly in its darker varieties) is a siliceous sedimentary rock composed primarily of silicon dioxide (SiO₂) in the form of microcrystalline and cryptocrystalline quartz and chalcedony. The "Boneca de Sílex" is, therefore, an ornamental siliceous concretion rather than an individual crystal.
It features an extremely fine grain, high durability, and conchoidal fracture. Colors range from cream, gray, and brown to chocolate and black. A polished finish can reveal a waxy to vitreous luster, as well as banding, mottling, and structures inherited from the original sediments.
A more detailed description of the Irati "Bonecas de Sílex" was presented by Amaral (1966). ...which defined them as spherical nodules that often coalesce into irregular or “bizarre” shapes.
These nodules tend to concentrate in the reddish soil resulting from the weathering of Irati Formation rocks. Specimens measuring a few centimeters predominate, though sizes range from a few millimeters to a decimeter or more, with some exceptionally large occurrences. They are generally flattened parallel to the bedding plane. They may occur in both the limestones and the shales of the rhythmic zone, being particularly abundant in the shales. In some levels, they are concentrated in a specific layer; in others, they are distributed in an apparently chaotic manner.
Their relationship with the host rock helps reconstruct their growth. In certain limestones, the nodule deforms the surrounding layers; in others, it does not disturb the stratification and internally preserves the structure of the replaced limestone. In shales, the rock may mold itself around the concretions. At a quarry in Ipeúna, shale was observed to be heavily corrugated due to the large quantity of nodules.
Caution is advised when explaining the genesis of these formations. The chert within the Irati Formation was not produced by a single mechanism or at a single point in time. Syngenetic or early-stage types, metasomatic types formed by the replacement of carbonates, occurrences related to later fluids, and forms possibly associated with weathering have all been identified. Chert formed at different times and under different conditions may coexist within a single sample.
For certain black nodules preserved in pyrobituminous shales, the abundance of spores within them was considered strong evidence of a syngenetic origin—meaning formation occurred during or shortly after sediment deposition. The presence of finely disseminated pyrite near the contact with the shale suggests that this mineral penetrated the siliceous gel before it hardened. Possible opal remnants that did not fully recrystallize have also been noted.
The silica required for chert formation may have originated, in part, from the dissolution of siliceous sponge spicules. However, as it was considered unlikely that sponges alone could supply the vast volume of silica found in the Irati Formation, it has also been proposed that silica was released during clay mineral transformations. Thus, these "Bonecas de Sílex" (chert nodules) record a complex combination of biogenic, chemical, and diagenetic processes.
GEOLOGICAL CONTEXT AND DISTRIBUTION
The Irati Formation is part of the Permian sequence of the Paraná Basin and is widely distributed across southern and southeastern Brazil. Classic studies describe its characteristic lithologies as including black shales—sometimes pyrobituminous—associated with limestones and dolomites, accompanied by chert nodules, laminae, and layers.
These chert nodules have been documented in the state of São Paulo, particularly along the Piracicaba–Laranjal–Pereiras axis and in Ipeúna, as well as at locations in the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina. Abundant chert nodules—locally known as *Bonecas de Sílex* (Chert Dolls)—have been described in black shales in the Bom Retiro–Ribeirão Grande region. In the area between Piracicaba and Pereiras, limestone mining exposures revealed pyrobituminous shales containing numerous chert nodules situated beneath stratigraphic levels known regionally as the "blue slab" (*laje azul*) and the dolomitic "bench" (*banco*).
Near the Piracicaba–Tietê highway, clayey siltstones were also observed intercalated between weathered shales—which contain abundant chert nodules—and the upper dolomitic bench. These records demonstrate that the nodules are not isolated occurrences but rather part of recognizable stratigraphic levels within the Irati Formation.
These rocks are associated with a low-energy depositional environment that developed in a large water body characterized by regionally flat topography and tectonic stability. Stagnant waters likely fostered reducing conditions and the partial preservation of organic matter. Geochemical evidence and the presence of sponge spicules suggest that this basin had some connection to the sea.
The chert nodule is not a body fossil; it is a mineral structure of sedimentary and diagenetic origin. However, some nodules may incorporate spores, organic matter, microstructures, and other traces of the sediments in which they grew, effectively acting as capsules of geological history.
This specimen originates from the Irati Formation, specifically from the carbonate and shale interval studied in the region of Piracicaba, Laranjal, Ipeúna, and neighboring municipalities. Since the 1960s, scientific studies have documented these "Chert Dolls" as characteristic features of these Permian rocks.
