Selenite is the transparent-to-translucent variety of gypsum, a sulfate mineral with the chemical formula CaSO₄·2H₂O. Its structure contains two water molecules, and it crystallizes in the monoclinic system, forming sheets, plates, and tabular or prismatic crystals. Its name derives from the Greek *selḗnē* (Moon), referencing the soft luminosity of its surfaces; despite the name, it does not contain the element selenium.
It forms primarily in evaporitic environments through the concentration and precipitation of calcium sulfate during the evaporation of ancient lakes or seas.
