Sourced from Araçuaí, Minas Gerais, Brazil, Tourmaline belongs to a group of boron-bearing cyclosilicates formed, among other environments, in granitic pegmatites. Rubellite is the gemological term for pink-to-red tourmaline; Achroite refers to colorless or nearly colorless tourmaline. Both color varieties can occur in Elbaite, a species rich in lithium, sodium and aluminum.
Color zoning reflects changes in fluid chemistry during crystal growth. Manganese may contribute to pink hues, whereas very low concentrations of coloring elements favor nearly colorless areas. With trigonal crystal symmetry, vitreous luster and a Mohs hardness of approximately 7–7.5, Tourmaline preserves natural textures and contrasts that tell its geological story. Definitive mineral-species identification may require specific gemological analysis.
