Tourmaline belongs to a complex group of boron cyclosilicates. In this specimen, the pink-to-reddish zones are identified as Rubellite, while the colorless areas correspond to Achroite—gemological designations based on color. Both are generally associated with Elbaite, a species rich in sodium, lithium, and aluminum, with the simplified formula Na(Li,Al)₃Al₆(Si₆O₁₈)(BO₃)₃(OH)₄.
This color combination formed during crystal growth, as changes in the composition of mineralizing fluids altered the quantity of elements incorporated into the crystal structure. Manganese contributes to the pink and red hues; in regions with extremely low concentrations of chromophore elements, the crystal remains colorless or nearly colorless. This alternation records different stages of crystallization, making its configuration naturally unique.
Crystallizing in the trigonal system, Tourmaline typically forms elongated prisms with rounded triangular cross-sections and longitudinal striations.
