ORIGIN & THE SCIENCE OF BEAUTY

Verdelite is the green variety of Elbaite Tourmaline, a boron, aluminum, sodium and lithium cyclosilicate that crystallizes in the trigonal system. Its crystals typically show an elongated prismatic habit, longitudinal striations, vitreous luster and colors ranging from green to dark green, often with strong pleochroism. This pair comes from the Araçuaí region of Minas Gerais, Brazil, within granitic pegmatites of the Eastern Pegmatite Province, linked to the Brasiliano cycle, approximately 600 to 480 million years old.

In mineral twinning, two or more crystals of the same species grow together according to an organized crystallographic relationship. A “trigger” crystal is a smaller crystal growing on the side of an older main crystal. In this specimen, the association includes Apatite: small prismatic crystals that, in Minas Gerais pegmatites, may respond to UV light with violet, bluish-purple or pale lilac fluorescence, creating a striking contrast with the Green Tourmaline.
