ORIGIN & THE SCIENCE OF BEAUTY
Sourced from Capelinha, Minas Gerais, Brazil, staurolite is a complex aluminum- and iron-rich silicate characteristic of metamorphic rocks formed under elevated pressure and temperature. It is known for a Mohs hardness of approximately 7–7.5 and colors ranging from yellowish brown to reddish brown and dark brown. Its name comes from the Greek stauros, “cross,” and lithos, “stone.”
Its most iconic feature is penetration twinning: two crystals may grow interpenetrated to form natural crosses, including configurations associated with St. Andrew’s, Maltese and Roman crosses. This striking morphology made staurolite highly recognizable among collectors and gave rise to the popular name “Fairy Cross.” For this specimen, LAZZERINI-GEOJOIAS assigns Grade A: brownish color, translucency, strong luster, more than 10% matrix and an euhedral form.
