From Araçuaí, Minas Gerais, Brazil, Watermelon Tourmaline is a pink-and-green color-zoned form of Elbaite, a mineral of the tourmaline group. It is a complex cyclosilicate rich in boron, aluminum, sodium and lithium, formed mainly in granitic pegmatites. Changes in chemical conditions as the crystal grows generate the contrasting hues: manganese commonly contributes to pink, while green coloration depends on the local crystal chemistry.

This gem retains a natural prismatic face, vitreous luster, translucency and approximately 25%–50% mineral matrix, the features recorded for its A-grade classification. Tourmaline has a Mohs hardness of around 7–7.5. Its shades and untouched crystal surfaces make it a miniature sculpture of Brazil’s mineral diversity.
