Amber is a mineraloid of organic origin, heterogeneous in composition, on average C10H16O, consisting of various resinous bodies derived from resins of coniferous trees and leguminous plants that, buried for millions of years, underwent a polymerization process - one of the forms of fossilization.
It is among the few “organic gems” created by biological processes, rather than geological ones. It tends to be softer and can be easily carved or polished using primitive methods, which is why many of the earliest pieces of jewelry were made from these gems. Highly valued from antiquity to the present as a precious stone.
Of the organic gems, only Amber is of non-recent plant origin, as it is a resin originating from coniferous trees ("pinus succinites") that lived between 320 and 60 million years ago, whose resin underwent a fossilization period estimated between 25 and 45 million years ago. In addition, it may contain various types of inclusions inside, such as insects and plants from the time it was formed, thus constituting a paleontological repository of great value, a characteristic not found in any other gem.
Notably, in the film Jurassic Park (1993), Amber is fundamental to the plot, serving as a source of dinosaur DNA. Scientists extract blood from prehistoric mosquitoes preserved in this fossilized resin to clone the creatures. Although scientifically impossible today, the idea was inspired by real studies on insects in this gem. Michael Crichton, author of the book, based his premise on research from the 1980s.
One of its peculiarities is being very light, with a density slightly greater than that of water (1.08), which allows it to float in saltwater and be part of larger, but lighter, jewelry. Another, which gave it its name, is that when heated between 150 and 250 °C it exudes a pleasant aroma reminiscent of pine resin; the name Amber comes from the Arabic anbar, which means "perfume".
Also a typical characteristic of Amber, known for centuries, is its ability to become electrified when rubbed against a woolen cloth, managing to attract lightweight objects, such as pieces of paper. For this reason, it was called "Elektron" in ancient Greece.
Its most common color (70%) is yellow, but it can also be dark brown, greenish-brown, reddish-brown, bluish, gray, black, red, or white. There may be more than one color or several shades in the same piece. Its luster varies from transparent to opaque. UV fluorescence is also common.
Symbolism and energetic traditions
Amber has one of the oldest and most detailed historical traditions of any gemstone, being included in virtually all known lapidary texts that describe precious stones and their powers. At various times, it was worth more than gold and was fiercely coveted by kings and tsars, popes and empresses. The first evidence of the use of amber dates back to Neolithic times in modern-day Poland. During the Stone Age, Scandinavians traded amber for goods from Greece and Italy along the "Amber Route". The first recorded observations of the gem came from the 1st-century Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder, who named it Succinite.
The ancient Romans created jewelry, tableware, and incense from amber stone. The tradition surrounding the meaning and origins of this gem is abundant. In Poland, legends call it "The Gold of the North."
Main metaphysical beliefs: "The Stone of Health." Cleansing, healing, protection, relieves stress (biostimulant), dissipates nervous tension and facilitates expression/manifestation, promotes fertility, increases confidence, mental clarity, and creative self-expression.
Zodiac: Leo, Aquarius, and Sagittarius. Chakras: Solar Plexus.
