Coquina is a biogenic or bioclastic carbonate sedimentary rock, formed by the accumulation of cemented shell fragments. It can be considered a type of limestone and is classified according to its cementation and consolidation: Granular Stone (low) and Biosparite (high) (IGC/USP/BRA). The term comes from the Spanish meaning "tiny shell," also known by other names: "Shell-Bed," Writing Stone, Elephant Skin Stone, or Tempestite. It originated from high-energy events in transitional marine and freshwater environments in the Pircacicaba region of São Paulo/BRA during the Lower Permian (280 million years ago) to Middle Permian (260 million years ago).
It is basically composed of calcium carbonate (calcite/aragonite), and may contain bioclasts and a concentration of organic phosphates. Its average size is that of a grain of sand (greater than 2 mm in diameter), and it has extremely high porosity and low particle size selection, hardness, and specific gravity. Its luster is opaque, sometimes with silicate portions. Its colors are typically heterogeneous, with patterns in white, brown, yellow, and gray. This also suggests applications in chromotherapy.
History:
At the Inca site of Tacahuay Tambo, in southern Peru, large coquina slabs were used in the construction of elite tombs since pre-Hispanic times, suggesting a strong symbolic, spiritual, and religious association. It is also interesting that the Spanish began using coquina as a building material in Florida in 1598. In St. Augustine, the Castillo de San Marcos and the first lighthouse were built with coquina. Because coquina is so soft, cannonballs would embed themselves in the fort's walls instead of destroying them.
