Topaz is a fluorine and aluminum silicate (Al₂SiO₄(F,OH)₂), known for its vitreous luster, high optical dispersion (ability to split white light into its spectral colors - responsible for the "fire" or flashes of color), high density, basal cleavage and excellent resistance; it is the hardest silicate mineral ever discovered (8 on the Mohs scale).
