Malachite is a hydrated copper carbonate with the chemical formula Cu₂CO₃(OH)₂. It is formed through the chemical alteration of primary copper minerals when exposed to water and carbon dioxide over extensive geological processes. Its crystals are tiny, acicular or needle-shaped, clustered so tightly that the mineral is found mainly as a solid pattern in bands.

Its most redeeming characteristic is its green color, which ranges from light green to almost black. It is one of the most distinctive, fascinating and visually stunning ornamental minerals available in Brazil, with its wavy bands in shades of green, it looks like a work of art created by nature over thousands of years.
