Description: Petalite is a lithium and aluminum tectosilicate (LiAlSi4O10), a rare mineral found exclusively in granitic pegmatites (LCT); those containing lithium represent only 1 to 2% of all pegmatites. Its perfect cleavage at perpendicular angles, like leaves, earned it its name from the Greek "petalon". It occurs in the form of tabular crystals or columnar masses, with horizontal and vertical striations, in the colors: colorless, white, gray, yellow, or pale pink; and when highly transparent, it is called Castorite.

It has a vitreous to pearly luster on its cleavage surfaces, and its transparent to translucent nature allows light to pass through it; it may exhibit the "cat's eye" type chatoyancy phenomenon. It possesses distinct physical properties, such as: hardness, low thermal expansion, and a high melting point.

Cultural Significance

Like other minerals found in the Eastern Pegmatite Province of Brazil (Spodumene, Scapolite, and Cryolite), Petalite was discovered in 1800 by José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva, a Brazilian naturalist, mineralogist, and statesman; political advisor to Pedro I, tutor to Pedro II. Thus, it also helped to keep the subject of rare stones common among the colonial court of Dom João and his involvement since 1808.

And considering that Petalite later made possible the discovery of the element Lithium, it indirectly makes José Bonifácio the only Brazilian to discover a chemical element (the official discovery of Lithium occurred 17 years later).
