.Geology: It is present in many igneous rocks as a primary product of crystallization, in metamorphic rocks as recrystallized grains, and in sedimentary rocks as detrital grains. Its igneous origins occur mainly through fractional crystallization processes and remobilization of certain elements in relation to high-temperature hydrothermal fluids, especially embedded in carbonatites and limestones altered by metamorphism. Some of the largest zircon crystals, suitable for use as gemstones, are formed in pegmatite cavities.
