This meteorite is even rarer for several reasons: Achondrites (rocky meteorites without chondrules and originating from a differentiated parent body) represent only 8% of observed falls and 3% of those currently found among all types; HEDs (Howardites, Eucrites, and Diogenites) originate from the asteroid 4 Vesta, while almost 99% of all meteorites originate from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter; Among the Diogenites (Achondrites with 90% of the volume formed by Orthopyroxene, originating from the inner crust of 4 Vesta), Tatahouine is the only one composed mainly of numerous large and apparently non-fragmented crystals of this mineral, possessing dark/opaque veins, in addition to not being brecciated and having mosaic or impact-deformed textures.

What energies are involved?

Tatahouine carries with it the history of the beginning of the Solar System (~4.5 billion years ago), a crystallization in the deepest layers of the asteroid 4 Vesta, its mineralogy evidences gigantic impacts with pressures of up to 25.0 gigapascals – GPa. (to give you an idea, the pressure at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of our ocean, is only 0.1 GPa.) and fame for the cinematic glamour of the film "Star Wars" where it inspired the name of Luke Skywalker's home planet – "Tatooine".

Its fall was observed in the vicinity of the Tunisian city of Foum Tatahouine on June 27, 1931. With a characteristic olive-green color and black veins, its composition is dominated by orthopyroxene (~90% by volume), generally accompanied by small amounts of various silicates (Plagioclase, Olivine, Hypersthene, Pentlandite, Cristobalite) and opaque minerals. The dark color of the veins comes from the high concentration of opaque particles (Chromite, Troilite – 90% and Native Metal – 0.33%), among the native metals, Iron stands out with ~1% Nickel, 1% Cobalt and the variety of Kamacite (a mineral unknown on Planet Earth).
