Sourced from the Brejo/Três Barras area of Catugí, Minas Gerais, Brazil, these specimens are rated Grade A: attractive purple, blue and gray coloration, opaque to translucent, with 10% to 25% matrix. Iolite is the gem variety of Cordierite, a magnesium-iron-aluminum silicate with the formula (Mg,Fe)₂Al₄Si₅O₁₈ and a Mohs hardness of approximately 7 to 7.5.
Its defining optical feature is strong pleochroism: depending on the viewing direction, the crystal may reveal blue-violet, blue, gray and sometimes yellowish or greenish nuances.
