ORIGIN & THE SCIENCE OF BEAUTY
Originating from Araçuaí, Minas Gerais, Brazil, Kunzite is the pink-to-lilac variety of Spodumene (LiAlSi₂O₆)—a lithium aluminum silicate belonging to the pyroxene group. It exhibits a vitreous luster, transparency, and distinct natural crystal habits. Its color is attributed to the presence of manganese, while its composition also includes lithium and rare earth elements. The mineral holds significant cultural importance in Brazil, having been discovered in 1800 by the Brazilian mineralogist, politician, and poet José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva.
The naturally etched surface features lines, grooves, cavities, and patterns that document the processes of mineral growth and dissolution. Triangular configurations are traditionally referred to as "trigons" or "Record Keepers." In this specimen, these markings are entirely natural, not human-made inscriptions. Under 365 nm ultraviolet light, the specimen displays a golden-pink to orange luminescence. The crystal also exhibits pleochroism (varying color nuances depending on the viewing angle) and a reversible photochromic response, or tenebrescence (a change in color based on the environment—sunlight, shade, or indoor/nighttime conditions).
