Another exclusive piece from LAZZERINI-GEOJOIAS, an exotic fragment of granitoid rock containing amazonite with a color similar to the famous Paraíba tourmaline, among other minerals (41.9 ct), classified as gemological grade B; handcrafted with wire in a wire mesh and hung by a Portuguese link necklace (both plated in 18k gold).
Description
This specimen is commercially known as Paraíba Amazonite due to the intense blue-green color (similar to the hue of Paraíba tourmalines) of the feldspar present in the equigranular texture of a granitic rock, along with other minerals such as: quartz, microcline, biotite, and hornblende. It originates from Santa Maria de Itabira – Minas Gerais – Brazil, from the Borrachudos Suite, approximately 1.7 billion years old. with its granites, of medium to coarse grain size, receiving the same name since 1963 and which outcrop in the form of several bodies in the central portion of the State of Minas Gerais, northeast of the Iron Quadrangle.
Amazonite is a silicate of the Microcline alkali feldspar group, with the chemical composition KAlSi₃O₈ and a triclinic crystal system. It has a green to bluish-green (apple) color, perfect cleavages in two directions forming angles of 90° or close to this value, Mohs hardness around 6.0 and relative density between 2.55 and 2.76 g/cm3.
Feldspars are the most abundant minerals in the crust, representing more than 60% of the Earth's surface. However, Amazonite is a mineral of limited occurrence; highly valued as an ornamental stone, in statuary and in jewelry.
In this case, they are scientifically studied by the alteration known as Amazonitization, a hydrothermal-metasomatic process caused by the intrusion of pegmatites, which alters the original potassium feldspar, giving it a unique blue-green color. Considering the relatively low temperatures of pegmatitic magmas and the massive structure of the granite, the metasomatic process responsible for Amazonitization was quite efficient, since the aureoles locally reach a width equivalent to that of the pegmatite itself. The intensity of the green color in the granite increases in the direction of contact with the pegmatite. Its essential mineralogy consists of pearlitic microcline feldspar (meso and macro).
There are several explanations for this coloration: correlation with the lead content and presence of water, mainly Pb1+, produced from Pb2+; dimeric complexes [Pb–Pb]3+; by irradiation from the disintegration of potassium isotopes (K40); structural defects; Presence of some salt, organic Fe, Rb, Ga and other Rare Earth elements. Literature suggests that the introduction, in the sub-solid stage, of Pb and water into the granitic host rock during the intrusion of the pegmatites, was responsible for the generation of H₂O-Pb pairs in the Microcline.
Cultural Significance
Although used as jewelry, ornaments, amulets and talismans since ancient Egypt. This name derives from the ancient Europeans who believed the first samples that arrived there came from the banks of the Amazon River.
Traditions and Symbolism
Also called "Amazon Stone" or erroneously Brazilian Jade, its vibrant tones that mix green and blue are often compared to the famous Tiffany Quartzite.
