ORIGIN & THE SCIENCE OF BEAUTY
From Araçuaí, Minas Gerais, Brazil, Watermelon Tourmaline is a color-zoned form of Elbaite, a complex boron-, aluminum-, sodium- and lithium-rich cyclosilicate of the tourmaline group. It forms mainly in granitic pegmatites. Changes in chemistry during crystal growth create contrasting pink and green zones. Manganese contributes to many pink hues, while the origin of green varies with the crystal’s composition.
This specimen features partly transparent, euhedral to subhedral crystals, with a twinned association of Rubellite and Verdelite alongside Albite, a white-to-colorless feldspar. Vitreous luster, natural crystal surfaces and the interplay of colors and shapes give the jewel its character without conventional faceting. Tourmaline has a Mohs hardness of approximately 7–7.5.
