ORIGIN & THE SCIENCE OF BEAUTY

Alexandrite is a rare variety of Chrysoberyl—an aluminum-beryllium oxide with the formula BeAl₂O₄, an orthorhombic crystal system, and a high hardness of 8.5 on the Mohs scale. Its most celebrated characteristic is the "alexandrite effect": the perception of different colors depending on the light source. Trace amounts of chromium substitute for some of the aluminum in the crystal structure and selectively absorb light; consequently, the gem may display green or blue-green tones in daylight and reddish, violet, or amethyst-like hues under incandescent light. The intensity of this color change varies naturally from specimen to specimen.

Discovered in Russia's Ural Mountains in the 1830s, it was named in honor of the future Tsar Alexander II. The conditions required for its formation are unusual, as beryllium and chromium rarely concentrate in the same geological environment. While new deposits were later identified in Brazil, Sri Lanka, East Africa, and elsewhere, natural Alexandrite remains one of the rarest and most sought-after gemstones.
