ORIGIN & THE SCIENCE OF BEAUTY

From Araçuaí, Minas Gerais, Brazil, this bicolor Tourmaline originates in rare-element-rich granitic pegmatites. Tourmalines are boron-bearing cyclosilicates. Rubellite is the pink-to-red gemological designation, while Achroite refers to colorless or nearly colorless Tourmaline. Both appearances frequently occur in Elbaite, a lithium-, sodium- and aluminum-rich tourmaline species.

Its color contrast records chemical changes during crystal growth. Traces of manganese contribute to pink hues, whereas very low levels of coloring elements result in colorless zones. Tourmaline has vitreous luster, trigonal crystal symmetry and a Mohs hardness of 7–7.5. The twinned association and untouched natural surfaces make this specimen a distinctive example of Brazilian mineral diversity.
